OnSide Youth Zones

OnSide Youth Zones provide quality, safe and affordable facilities for young people. Here they can engage in fun and productive activities, with positive adult role models, to improve their life chances, choices and opportunities.

Established in 2008, OnSide was the creation of Bill Holroyd CBE, former Chair of Bolton Lads and Girls Club (BLGC) and Jerry Glover MBE who had been the Chief Executive at BLGC for 32 years.  During his time as Chair, Bill realised that other towns and cities would benefit from a first class facility like BLGC. Bolton has now been joined by OnSide Youth Zones in Blackburn, Carlisle, Manchester, Oldham and Wigan.

The existing Youth Zone network boasts 15,000 members, 300 dedicated members of staff and over 700 volunteers.

Each Youth Zone has a robust financial model, combining private and public sector funds with income generated from membership fees.

We were asked to help OnSide become a national charity, with the aim of opening 20 new ‘Youth Zones’ by 2020. This is an ambitious programme of work, and our flexible funding is intended to give them the best chance of success.

‘OnSide has successfully replicated the Youth Zone model in several places in the North West, which is what we are looking for from local projects with ambitions to scale up.’
