In difficult economic times people worry about jobs and money. Many find it hard to prioritise the environment, seeing it as a luxury they cannot afford. Through its Blue New Deal project, NEF seeks to show that coastal communities can have both jobs and healthy seas. Their work will involve: getting a better understanding the attitudes of people who live and work on the coast, producing economic evidence of the benefits of more productive and better managed seas, and working with others to get the messages across.
Relating the marine conservation debate to long-term employment for coastal communities appealed to us and combining scientific and economic data with social perspectives is unusual and innovative. The NEF team has the technical and personal skills to do this well. The work is a good match with our interest in new socio-economic approaches to reduce overfishing.
