Accessibility Statement for John Ellerman Foundation website
At John Ellerman Foundation, we believe that diversity, equity and inclusion must be applied to all that we do, including how people experience our website. We want John Ellerman Foundation’s website to be useful and accessible for as many people as possible. Our website has been assessed by an external auditor with expertise in website accessibility and using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. WCAG are internationally recognised guidelines for improving web accessibility, and UK public bodies have a legal obligation to comply with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines.
John Ellerman Foundation is a UK-registered charity with seven staff and is not legally obliged to comply with WCAG 2.1 standards. However, we are seeking to be as close to WCAG 2.1 compliance as we can be.
How accessible this website is
We are committed to continuous improvement around the accessibility and usability of our website, and have implemented a range of findings to make the website more accessible and usable, including simplifying content, ensuring the usability of weblinks, and making the site more navigable.
While the images on our website include captions, we are aware that some images have file names used as the Alt Text. Some of the images have Alt Text that do not offer accurate descriptions of the image.
We are also aware that there is an issue around the accessibility of PDF documents used on our website. We use PDFs for things like our Annual Report and Accounts, our policy documents and our funding guidelines. The issues identified are:
- Some of the PDFs on our website cannot be read at all by screen readers. Where PDFs can be read by screen readers, some blocks of text are not read in the correct order.
- The PDFs on our website do not have Alt text for the images within.
- Some of the tables in the PDFs on our website cannot be read by screen readers.
What we are doing to improve accessibility
We are working to update the Alt Text for our images to ensure they contain useful descriptions of the related images.
We are exploring our options for making the PDFs on our website more accessible, including updating them using software we have access to. In some cases like our funding guidelines, all the information contained within them is also present on individual webpages. We are also working with designers we use for our reports to ask them how they can make these documents more accessible and usable for those with screen readers. You can also request non-PDF versions of documents, where we have them, using the contact details below. This is an area of ongoing work and we hope over time the issues with our PDF documents will reduce.
